BenAndJessie.jpg: 1280x1024, 140k (May 30, 2008, at 11:26 AM) I'm helping out with Big Green Summer this year as the wiki Webmaster and one of three "mother hens."

A little about me... I grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from Grinnell College 10 years ago (1998). I spent six years in Minneapolis before I got tired of living in the city and hit the road on my bicycle for a year. One of the places I visited along the way was Fairfield -- Lonnie put me up for three nights and showed me the Art Walk and farmers' market, and I was hooked! I moved to Fairfield in 2006 and planned to stay indefinitely...

However, a year ago I met my fiancee, Jessie, and we will move to Emporia, Kansas in August (2008). We both love Fairfield, but she has her career to pursue. We'll be back someday! Meanwhile, I'm helping out with Big Green Summer. If you see me tapping away at my laptop, chances are I'm doing my work, which is Web development. This ain't no vacation for me -- I'm on the clock!

Today is my first day hanging out with the permaculture course. I arrived at about 2 thinking that a rainstorm would follow quickly, and that I'd get some work done on my laptop, but the storm held off and we went on a long walk through the woods. So far it looks like I'm not as tasty as other people: no ticks.

I had hoped to accompany the BGS interns to the MREA expo in Wisconsin this weekend, but my workday responsibilities won out. I hope that by going north they escape the plague of gnats that's currently in Fairfield.

The gnats are completely obnoxious, buzzing around people's heads, getting in our hair, eyes, noses, mouths. No one can remember seeing them in any previous year. What do they want from us? When will their short lifespans be over? What creatures will feast on them and have a population bloom of their own?
